Tourist Information about Ronda
Only 122 km from Malaga is located the city of the dreams, at an altitude of 740 m in an impressive montainous landscape. Ronda is on a steep slope in a rocky plateau, which is divided by a spectacular 100 m deep ravine and splits "the Pearl of the White Villages“ into two quarters. Great poets and writers, as Rainer Maria Rilke and Ernest Hemingway, were inspired by Ronda. Orson Wells and the actress Ava Gardner also lived for a while in Ronda.
In the Caliphate period Ronda was called “Izn-Rand Onda” and was one of the most important cities in the Caliphate thanks to its strategic location. The Arab baths and the “Puente Viejo” (Old Bridge) are from that time. But the most wonderful monument in Ronda was built in the 18th century: the “Puente Nuevo” (New Bridge) is at a height of 100 m, and connects the old quarter with the modern side of the city, known as “El Mercadillo”. The bullring, built in 1784 in a neoclassical style, is also really interesting, as it is one of the most important Spanish bullrings, and the most well-known bullfighters in the country often meet here. Madonna was also astonished when she discovered Ronda, and the video for her song Take a Bow was filmed near the bullring.
